West African drumming & dance in Townsville.
Our weekly class is taught by Debie, who has been playing djembe for many years and has studied with Griot Mohamed Bangoura Master Drummer BANGOURAKE as her main teacher, Debie has also been taught by Famoudou Konaté
and Mamady Keïta, and acknowledges the gift they have given to her along with other drum masters from Africa.
African drumming is a culture with a rich history of Griots who have the birthright to teach the rhythms to students, forever mindful and respectful of the beautiful culture of the drums. Griots are teachers, storytellers, singers, musicians, and oral historians in West Africa
Drumbumba performances are not traditional drumming they are performance drumming and the arrangments are taken from rhythms taught to Debie by her teachers and then arranged by Debie and the group. The rhythms are always played with love and a great respect for the culture of the drums and dances of West Africa.
Karen our dancer is of Caribbean origins and her dances are an expression of emotion and movement not traditional West African dance choreography.
Discover the power of collective rhythm and unlock a world of happy endorphins.
